Fort Davis to Marathon TX – April 7

I had a good rest day in Fort Davis yesterday. It was nice to be back staying at the Stone Village Tourist Camp again. I spent a few nights there last November before riding the Big Bend Tour.   I cleaned and lubed my bike chain, adjusts the brakes and washed my bike.  After that, I headed to the post office and shipped a box of clothes I wasn’t using and a pound of chili powder home. I picked up the chili powder in Hatch, New Mexico, chili capital of the US.  That evening a had a good meal at a Mexican restaurant.

We got on the road to Marathon, just after 8am. Today’s ride was 55 miles (88 km) on mostly flat terrain so we knew we were in for an easy day. The ride to Alpine was 24 miles. Along the way we enjoyed a 7 or 8 mile break from the chip seal surface and rode on smooth pavement.

We stopped at a coffee shop in Alpine and me a fellow who is walking from Florida to California to raise awareness of heart disease, which he has.  He started his walk in September. Along the way someone gave him a black lab and that is his walking companion. He said he has a film crew following him to document his walk. He said he weighed 300 lbs. when he started and also mentioned that he has become a vegetarian and since doing that the doctors have taken him off all of his meds.

After Alpine, we continued on to Marathon and arrived around 12:30. We found a diner and grabbed a quick lunch before heading to the RV Park to set up camp.
