I got on the road just before 7:30. I planned this tour with a Sunday morning departure so I could get through San Diego on a day with lighter traffic. The roads and bike lanes in the city were in rougher shape than a few years ago. Lots of bumps and large cracks to look out for.
It was a cool morning so I wore a jacket and long pants for most of the morning. There was a fair bit of climbing today and my legs felt like they were out of cycling shape. I guess I didn’t ride my fat bike up any steep bills this winter at home.
I arrived in Alpine around 11:15 and stopped at a Mexican restaurant for lunch. After a good meal of eggs, rice, tortillas, re-fried beans, salsa and coffee I was ready to move on.
It warmed up a little to the mid teens Celsius in the afternoon so I was able carry on in shorts. There was a short section of the route on the interstate highway. There was a lot of high speed traffic going by but at least the shoulders were quite wide so I felt pretty safe.
After 49 miles I arrived in Pine Valley just before 3pm. I took it pretty easy today so I feel good for my first day out. Tomorrow will be a shorter ride to Jacumba Springs.
