Fort Davis to McDonald Observatory and return

I headed out on my bicycle around 10am this morning for the McDonald Observatory. It is located northwest of Fort Davis on Mount Locke in the Davis Mountains. The ride to the observatory was mostly uphill so it took a little longer to get there than it did to get back. The elevation of Fort Davis is 4892 feet and the observatory is at an elevation of over 6000 feet. I took a short tour in the visitor centre and then sat outside at a picnic table and enjoyed the view while I had a coffee and my lunch. The round trip distance was 29 miles.

These chip seal roads are a little rougher than the ones back home on HWY 638 and on St. Joseph Island. There seems to be more “chip” and less “seal”.

When I returned to Fort Davis I drove back to the botanical gardens to walk around on some of the trails. The weather forecast for next week on my bike tour calls for cooler weather and some rain. That shouldn’t be a problem as I have good rain gear and it will still be warmer than back home.
