Silsbee TX – Merryville LA – April 21

We got on the road before 8am this morning. The sky was clear and the temperature was in the low 60’s.   We’ve left the Texas Hill Country behind us and were on our way to another day of riding on mainly flat terrain.

We followed US 96 and passed through the small towns of  Evadale and Buna before arriving in Kirbyville after 29 miles.  We stopped at a great diner on the west side of the road at the north end of Kirbyville near the turn on to Rd. 363. After having some coffee, eggs and toast, I was ready to continue on to our destination of Merryville, Louisiana.  After riding about 17 miles on Rd. 363 east, we reached the small town of Bon Wier. After continuing east on US 190 for about two miles, we reached the Sabine River, the boundary between Texas and Louisiana.   There was no “Welcome to Louisiana” sign, so we took pictures on the bridge that spanned the river.

After riding another 4 or 5 miles, we arrived in Merryville LA. After a short stop at the tourist information centre, we continued on to the Merryville Museum and Historical Society, where we set up camp. A small shower and bathroom facility is available for cyclists on the property.

Tonight the Museum and Historical Society will be providing us with a meal and they will also be providing breakfast tomorrow. We have met some very friendly people in town.

Today’s mainly flat ride was 56 miles.
