De Tour to Sault Ste. Marie

The forecast for Saturday was for a hot day in the upper 20’s C so after packing up my tent and spending a few minutes at the beach watching the sunrise I got on the road before 7:30. I had the whole road to myself as I pedalled north on highway M-48. When I reached Goetzville I left M-48 and followed Raber Road and Gogomain Road along the St. Marys River and Munuscong Bay. I then travelled north along Riverside Drive and Scenic Drive to Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. After grabbing a sandwich at a gas station near the US Customs, I road over the International Bridge to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The ride over the bridge with heavy, holiday traffic was the only time on the 4 day trip that I was concerned with safety. I quickly passed through Canadian Customs and pedalled home. 66 miles of pedalling for the day.

I enjoyed my short cycle tour through east part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and am planning to do much more touring in Michigan. For most of the trip I followed cue sheets that were in a booklet that I purchased from the League of Michigan Bicyclists. I found the turn by turn directions easy to follow and the mileage accurate. I also carried a copy of the Superior Region – East, Road and Trail Bicycling Guide that is useful and free at the Michigan Welcome Centre.

Waiting to go through Canada Customs. I was the only one in line on a bicycle.
