Lost Maples State Natural Area (north of Vanderpool) to Kerrville TX – April 13

Hunt TX. Halfway mark in my across USA ride.

An intense thunder storm passed through the area last night. It started after 10:30 and woke me up just after I had fallen to sleep.  The lightning lit up my tent several times and when I got up in the morning I had to pack a wet tent fly away.  My tent and my gear stayed dry throughout the night.

I got on the road with some of the other riders just after 8am.   As soon as we left the campground we began a steep climb that lasted just over 3/4 of a mile or so.  Once we got to the top of the climb, we rode in fairly thick mist for several miles before descending and making our turn east on SR 39.  Just before he turn we came upon 2 deer.  Beyond the road right of way, the fields were fenced so the deer had no choice but to run along he shoulder in front of us for a while.

Once we reached SR 39 we travelled along a road with miles of dips and climbs and once we got pedalling hard we could use the momentum we gained going down the dips to get most of the way up the next climb.  After riding about 21 miles on SR 39 we arrived in the town of Hunt and stopped for a bite to eat.  The area around Hunt follows the Guadalupe River and passes through a beautiful tourist area along the river.

After another 13 miles we arrived at Kerrville and stopped at the local bike shop before heading to the Schreiner Park.  The park is situated along the Guadalupe River and is one of the nicer ones that we have stayed in.  Today’s ride was 53 miles.  Tomorrow’s ride will be longer.
