Winter Cycling

Along with all of the cross country skiing that I’ve been doing over the winter, I’ve been trying to keep my cycling legs in shape by riding on the indoor trainer 3-4 days each week for the last few months. I’ll be heading south in a few weeks for a one week bicycle tour through the Death Valley area. The cold temperatures and constant snowfall over the winter has made riding outdoors difficult and unsafe. Recently the longer days, sunshine and warmer temperatures have helped clear up some of the roads in town and enabled me to take my old Raleigh road bike out for some rides. Yesterday the temperature was -10c with a wind chill of -18c. I managed to ride for just over an hour before I had to call it quits because of cold toes. The forecast calls for temperatures in the -5c and warmer range for the next several days so I hope to get out and ride for a couple of hours or more before we get more snow later in the week.
