Jackson to Franklinton LA – April 26

We left Perry’s Bike Hostel and Camp around 7:30 this morning. The weather forecast was calling for sunny skies and a high of 94 degrees.

After riding north on SR 68 for a few miles we passed an area with several tents set up. Apparently a group of people were camping and taking part in a Civil War re-enactment. A little further up the road we passed a correctional facility.

Instead of following the ACA route and continuing on SR 68, SR 19 and SR 422 through Wilson, Norwood and Woodland, we followed SR 10 east all the way to SR 38 and headed north to Chipola to get back on the ACA route.  SR 10 had good shoulders and the traffic was light since it was a Sunday.

Before reaching Chipola I noticed a fire tower off to the side of the road.  Just before town, we passed a recent burned over area along the side of the road.

Recent burn on the left.

After several days of riding on basically flat surfaces, it was nice to ride he rolling hills of east Louisiana.

We stopped in Easleyville and had a short break and a snack. After cycling another 23 miles or so we stopped on the side of the road near Bolivar and ate our sandwhiches.

Sandwhich break along the side of the road.  Humid and over 90 degrees.

The traffic volume picked up the next 15 miles to Franklinton on the winding 2 lane road.

Today’s ride was 76 miles. Tomorrow will be a shorter day of riding.  We’ll have about 50 miles to cycle to Poplarville Mississippi.  On the 28th we will take the van to New Orleans and spend the night there.
