Simmesport to Jackson LA – April 25

The weather forecast called for thunderstorms and severe weather early in the afternoon so a few of us wanted to get an early start.  We cycled to a truck stop about a half a mile from our campsite and had breakfast at 6am. After breakfast we returned to the campsite, loaded our camping gear in the ACA trailer and got on the road at 7am.

We deviated a little from the ACA route and followed LA 1, east to Innes and then turned east on to Levee Road to rejoin the ACA route. The road ran adjacent to a levee that ran along the edge of the Raccourci Old River.  We encountered a fit dog that was able to chase us further than any other dog since we started out in San Diego. We reached a speed of over 23 mph before finally out distancing ourselves from him.

Following Levee Road

After about 37 miles we approached the town of New Roads just as the area was about to be hit by thunderstorms.  We stopped at a convenience store to wait out the storm for a while and then moved on the a nice restaurant overlooking False River for lunch.

Once the lightning had stopped, we headed out in the rain to ride the rest of the way to the bike hostel near Jackson. The sky started to clear up after riding about 5 miles. By the time we reached Perry’s Bike Hostel and Camp (4.3 miles south of Jackson), the rain had stopped.  We cycled 62 miles today.
