Presidio to Marfa

Presidio to Marfa, 60 Miles. We spent last night at the Three Palms Inn and had an opportunity to dry out our tents on the railings outside of the hotel rooms before dark. It was clear and sunny when I set out for today’s ride from Presidio to Marfa. It was a long stretch with no services along the way except for the water stop set-up with the Adventure Cycling van at mile 32. This was one of the more challenging days as we gained nearly a mile of elevation over 60 miles. At the highest elevation I was about 5,400 feet above sea level. After the water stop there was a drop of about 900 feet before climbing again into the town of Marfa where the group camped at the El Cosmico RV Park.

Marfa has a population of about 1,980 people and was founded in the early 1880s as a railroad waterstop.  After setting up my tent and getting organized I walked in to town with a couple of the other riders and found a coffee shop to relax in for a while and connect to the internet through wifi.  Marfa has an ‘artsy’ feel to it and numerous films have been shot there including Giant with Liz Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean as well as more recent films such as No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood.

Elephant Rock.  I took this picture while riding.  It looked more like an elephant after I had put the camera away and viewed it from a different angle.
